Fantasy Dud: Rashard Mendenhall

Rashard Mendenhall, who had off-season knee surgery, was recently activated from the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. There have been reports that he has looked decent in recent workouts. So, he is ready to roll, right?

Not so fast.

Running with some burst in non-contact drills is one thing -- but cutting, turning, blocking, and withstanding hard hits in live-action is quite something else. With the season less than 2 weeks away, Mendenhall will not be at even close to 100 percent, which crushes his Fantasy value.

It certainly is a good sign that he is no longer a lock to be on the PUP to start the season, as  that would have ruled him out for the first 6 weeks of the regular season. Still, it stands to reason that the Steelers will enter the season with Isaac Redman as the feature back. Remember also what a disappointment Mendenhall was as a fantasy  performer last season -- just two games in which he rushed for over 100 yards -- when he started 15 of 16 games.

Do not invest anything more than a late-round pick on Mendenhall -- and that is only if you have room on your roster to potentially carry a player who may not see the field for a number of weeks, if at all.
