   2017 Compensatory Picks Announced

April 26, 2024
Al Lackner

Every year the NFL awards 32 additional draft picks to teams based on a complicated (and secret) formula that takes into account net free agent losses versus free agent acquisitions.

Some teams -- such as the Ravens, Bengals and Patriots -- appear to have figured out the system and know how to work it. Each year these teams always seem to have multiple compensatory picks. One trick, for example, is to identify those free agents whom would not count as a free agent acquisition against the Compensatory Pick calculation if picked up -- a player who had been cut by his prior team, fr example.

One note of interest is that the compensatory picks this year are top-heavy, meaning many are 3rd rounders as opposed to bottom-heavy (more 7th rounders) as we have seen in the past.

Note also that this will be the first year that teams allowed to TRADE compensatory picks. It will be VERY interesting to see what impact this will have on the 2017 drat.
