I again went with the tried and true philosophy of taking running backs with my first three picks (R. Brown, K. Jones and R. Droughns), and four with my first five (C. Benson). I can’t stress enough how much RBs are worth in leagues that start only one QB. Going into the draft I planed on using my first three picks on RBs then loading up on WRs and saving QB until late. However, once my 5th pick rolled around and C. Benson was staring me in the face I couldn’t pass on him. The Bears are all about the run and they didn’t spend the 4th overall pick on Benson to let him sit on the bench for a second year in a row. I would definently recommend taking a running back who is the team’s only option to carry the ball and preferably who plays for a team that values the run over the pass. Based on this line of thinking I feel I have 3 running backs who fit that criteria and ever though some “experts” may feel I reached on Brown with #6 and even Jones in the second, I assuredly don’t feel that same. I’ll be the last one laughing when each of them gets 350+ carries this year.
After I locked up my RBs I needed WRs in a bad way. I feel lucky that I was able to grab Andre Johnson with my 4th pick as I feel he is going to have a very big year and even though they are a combined 100 years old Mason and Kennison are as reliable as old faithful. Once I saw that I had an aging (read “ready to break down at any time”) WR core I wanted to take a few high risk high reward receivers and think I did so with K. Curtis and A. Bryant. Considering I spent all my big picks on RB I’m very happy to have the mix of potential, reliability and explosiveness I do with my WRs.
As far as QB goes I stuck with my plan and grabbed one who I feel is still one of the, if not the, most under rated QB in the NFL, Jake Delhomme, in the 7th round. He has the weapons (S. Smith and K. Johnson) to throw for 4,000+ yards and 30+ TDs this year. After that extremely solid pick I again wanted to take a risk/reward type player as my 2nd QB. I don’t think you will find anybody who fits that definition better than D. Carr, who I grabbed in the 9th. With Kubiak running the show and E. Moulds and A. Johnson to throw to Carr could easily have his biggest year as a pro. I rounded out my QBs with A. Smith in the 14th. Even though he had one of the worst seasons in NFL history last year he was the fist overall pick for a reason and could end up having a good sophomore season, if he does I’ll be there to capitalize.
I’m not a fan of tight ends and wasn’t willing to spend a 2nd round pick to get Gates, the only TE worth having, so I waited until late and still landed two solid options in B. Watson and J. Wiggins. Kickers and Defenses are all the same at this point, I took J. Wilkins, Dallas D and Denver D with my last three picks.
I am Most Proud Of:
I really don’t have any one pick that I can pound my chest over and scream from the rooftops about. I feel I have a very solid team from top to bottom and as you know Fantasy Football is a marathon not a sprint so I set myself up well. With that being said I think I stole J. Delhomme in the 7th round.
Here's Who I Reached on:
I don’t think I had any picks you can truly call a “reach” but R. Droughns in the 3rd may fall into the outskirts of that category. He is a workhorse back who will put up good numbers week over week but doesn’t have that breakout speed or explosiveness you would like to see in a 3rd round running back.
My Overall Feeling About My Draft:
I pretty much summed it up in the philosophy section but in short, very solid, and with my running back talent and depth I have a better chance than most to bring home the crown for the 2nd time in 3 years.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Best
Draft?
I really like Al Lackner's team. I love his QB talent and if they can dodge the injury bug, which may be asking too much considering their history and age, he has a very good chance to go far this year. He has 3 very good running backs two of which have the potential to be great and the same can be said for his receivers. Somebody has to catch the ball in Tennessee Tampa Bay and Minnesota so why not K. Robinson, J. Galloway and D. Givens? If only one of them goes from average to good look out for Al.
I haven’t even mentioned that he has the top kicker from last year (N. Rackers) and a top 5 TE. (T. Gonzalez)
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Worst
Draft?
It’s an absolute no brainer, Don Kowalewski had the worst draft hands down. He had ONE good pick and that was C. Palmer in the 4th other than that his draft was an absolute train wreck, and that’s putting it nicely. He has 9 RBs but only two of which have proven themselves. (R. Johnson and W. Parker) He has two rookies L. Maroney and D. Williams but you can’t count on them as productive starters at this point and the other 5 probably shouldn’t be on anybody’s team. He only drafted 4 WRs and after H. Ward the talent level goes WAY down. M. Muhammad may be serviceable but A. Lelie and C. Rogers may not even be in the NFL this year much less contributing in any significant way. Considering we start 3 WRs you can say he’s in big trouble at this position. To wrap this up and put a cherry on top he didn’t even draft a kicker…….uuuugh.
