I’m a firm believer in grabbing a running back in the first round at almost all costs and then taking the player that represents the best value in the second round. That’s why I took Terrell Owens in the second round. His potential for posting fantasy points is too good to ignore, especially in a 3 WR league. With that said, if you don’t get two running backs in the first two rounds you MUST grab one in round three at all costs. Trust me on this one. Year’s of playing fantasy and consistently burning myself by taking the “best value” player versus getting two running backs in the first three rounds has flat out killed many of my teams. I also like to wait on a quarterback until about the 5th round or so. You can still find great value when you take this approach (in my case Donovan McNabb in the 5th). I also recommend taking a few risks in the later rounds. In my case Mike Williams. He’s got the talent to succeed but the odds are against him. I don’t lose much if he fails… but if he’ s good… I'm awesome!
I am Most Proud Of:
Picking Mike Vick in the 8th round. I already have a solid start in McNabb booked on the team. Vick is the type of player that can produce big points, especially with his feet. He’s the epitome of a “value player”. He has the talent to become a top tier fantasy player…as he’d been predicted to become the last few years.
Here's Who I Reached on:
Mike Williams was definitely a reach. I can’t make my mind up whether he’s a “super-sleeper” or just a lazy Richard kid that’ll never pan out as a pro. In the end I took him because I’m from Detroit and love the Martz offense. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that he’ll play enough to keep in roster spot worthy.
My Overall Feeling About My Draft:
I like my team, but don’t love it. TO is the wild card that will make or break my season. If he can just keep his mouth shut I just might be a championship contender for once…but TO behaving…it might be too much to ask. My running back situation is also a big scrappy with Tiki Barber being my only proven commodity. If I don’t end up with two of the backs I picked as solid starters by mid-season it might also signify the end of my season. I should’ve locked up at least one more running back a little sooner. This could prove to be a fatal error.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Best
Draft?
Hands down Mark Cacko. If for no other reason than Larry Johnson is on his roster. Mark did a nice job grabbing running backs with great potential in De’Shaun Foster, Reggie Bush, and Chris Brown. All are capable of having big weeks. I also like the picks of Bledsoe and Kitna at quarterback. Bledsoe has the new big play potential in Owens and Kitna has the nutty professor himself, Mike Martz, running his offense. Mark did well.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Worst
Draft?
Again hands down…Eric Tomei. He’s only got two starting running backs to talk about Edge and Jamal Lewis. I guess I don’t include Chester Taylor because he doesn’t give me good vibes in regards to his new gig in Minnesota. Also at quarterback Big Ben isn’t a great fantasy guy to have and I’m not totally sold on Eli Manning yet. Given my record in the AskTheCommish Writer’s League I think it’s fair to say that because of my comments I’ve guaranteed Eric victory and the championship this year. I love the unpredictability of this game!
