I am generally a huge RB guy, and I almost always take 2 RBs in the first two rounds, and often also in the third round. WRs seem to me to be overvalued this year more than others. WR is the deepest position in football, and value can usually be found later in the draft, as well as on the wire. There are usually a couple of guys who were undrafted who end up with huge seasons. But the WR had to be a higher priority with 3 required starters. Obviously, I didn’t follow this part of my strategy, and it resulted in a lack of depth at the RB position. This is my first time in a “best ball” format, so I went away from my usual strategy of only drafting one kicker and defense. While these positions usually won’t win you games, a bum outing can cost you precious points. So because of this, I made sure that I had 2 of each just in case my primary points-scorer had a bum outing. I also like to make sure that I can grab a top-5 consistent TE, though I won’t use the round that it’s necessary to grab Gates. But while the TE crop is deep this year, the guys who will get you points every week are still not very numerous, so I think it’s worth using an early-middle round to draft consistency.
I am Most Proud Of:
There are a couple, but Ron Dayne in the 7th was my best pick. To get a starting RB that late in the draft, especially one behind the Denver line really made me happy. Dayne is ridiculed, but he should at least match Anderson’s stats from last year. Especially since backs like Greg Jones, Fred Taylor, Gore, and the rookie backs who all have questions were already drafted, Dayne was great value there, and he will significantly outperform where I drafted him. I was also happy with Keyshawn in the 10th, Staley in the 12th, and the surprises with Tomlinson dropping to me at 4th overall and Julius Jones in the 3rd.
Here's Who I Reached on:
I don’t feel that I had any really bad reaches, but I could have held off on my second QB when I took Brooks in the 9th. He’s a guy I think will really rebound this year, but I could have slept for a round or two. I also should have resisted temptation on the Skins Defense as my second D in round 14.
My Overall Feeling About My Draft:
I think I did pretty well. I’ve got one extra beyond what will score at each position to help cover duds and injuries. I don’t feel like I had any really bad reaches, and a few guys slipped to me when I didn’t expect them to. My big weak point of my draft is I didn’t pay enough attention to bye weeks. Jones and LT are both off in week 3, and both of my TEs are off in week 5. My RB depth is not as strong as I’d like-I drafted for value in the upper rounds rather than shoring up my RB corps with people that I didn’t feel were worth their position. I didn’t expect some of the lesser guys to be gobbled up as much as they were, especially after the WR run in the 2nd.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Best
Draft?
I really like Eric’s draft. He’s got good depth everywhere, good balance, and no reaches. The only weakness that I see is TE, but that’s just because I don’t think Cooley will live up to expectations.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Worst
Draft?
Without question, Don. He drafted 9 RBs, but only 2 of them don’t have real questions, and that’s if you don’t count Parker. The rest are at this point backups or worse and include Priest, Arrington, and two guys I’d never heard of. We start 3 receivers and after Ward and Muhammad he has two guys who look to barely see the field. And he didn’t draft a kicker. Looks like he'll need to be active on the waiver wire.
