My draft fantasy football philosophy is actually more of a team management philosophy. My goal every year is to have the best possible roster every week. If this means picking up a seventh running back only to sit him on my bench, I do it. I don't care if it is Tyson Thompson getting a one week start because Parcells blew up in practice and he is trying to prove a point, or Fragile Fred Taylor can't go and the Jags give their 4th running back (LaBrandon Toefield, yes I picked him up in several leagues last year) on their roster a shot. I will pick up those guys only to have the best possible 16 (or 18) I can get my paws on. Keep in mind in a league that charges per transaction this may not be your best strategy. With that being said my draft day game plan is ultra-conservative. I draft the best player available, I stay away from injury prone guys (Fragile Fred comes to mind again), and I stay away from the trouble makers (Charles Rogers). Furthermore, I like to take big guns on the same team. This year I took the stud in the making Steven Jackson, and Marc Bulger. Both are St. Louis Rams, and if their offensive bounces back, and I believe they will even without Martz, I start making a huge impact. I would then have the potential to score a TD every time the Rams do. Yes, I know it is not 2002, however, this is a turf team with a good slew of offensive weapons. I will take my chances, by the way, No Martz, means ...GIVE THE BALL TO STEVEN JACKSON!
I am Most Proud Of:
I am most proud of Phillip Rivers. There is a reason the Chargers gave away Drew Brees. There is a reason Phillip Rivers was drafted so high in 2003. They guy can flat out go. Even if he turns out to have average NFL talent, he is in an offense with LT, Antonio Gates, a good veteran wide receiver in Keenan McCardell and an underrated Eric Parker. I will take that over a talented QB throwing to Arnaz Battle or Todd Pinkston.
Here's Who I Reached on:
Hindsight is always 20-20. My biggest reach is Marc Bulger, although I like him a lot. I probably should of taken Lawrence Maroney, or Jeremy Shockey. If I only knew I would have Phillip Rivers in the later rounds, here is where I should of went tight end. Not really a reach, but I think the Rams will (and they should) become a run heavy team this year.
My Overall Feeling About My Draft:
I am ready to go. What I like the best is a nice stock pile of running backs. Jackson and Davis are studs, and they are the focal points of their teams. Rhodes, Gado, and Duckett have the potential to eat up touchdowns and if there competition should go down, I have elite back status worthy of top tier picks. Sorry, Marvin Harrison but Reggie Wayne is slowly emerging as the #1 man in Indy and if Roy Williams can stay healthy I have a solid 1-2 punch and the wideout. TJ is a very serviceable #3, and I love Heath Miller's Red Zone production last year, without the Bus, we may see more TD's this year. Elam is as solid as they come, plus he kicks in the nice mile high air. Just look what Matt Holliday, and Brad Hawpe can do for the Rockies. I know its Baseball, but their fantasy numbers are like Pujols-like at home. The Giants are solid but like I said before I will play the best 16 players possible throughout the year if that means I pick up the Cardinals D because they are at home vs. the 49ers, well so be it.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Best
Draft?
Mark Cacko is solid at RB and WR. He should be in the running for yet another title in this league.
Which Owner (Other Than Yourself) Had The Worst
Draft?
Paul took a risk and went against the grain. While he has the #1 QB and #1 WR, I am not sure that his RBs will provide enough scoring to enable him to win it all.
