The more I think about it, the more I think that this
could be a comeback year for Steve McNair. Many people
forget that it was just two years ago that Steve McNair
and Peyton Manning were the co-MVP's for the NFL.
In mini-camps McNair has looked better than ever and is
zipping the ball as well as he has in a long time. He has
trimmed down, is quicker, and feels that he is healthy
enough and feeling well enough to last the entire season.
With Drew Bennett, an almost healthy Tyrone Calico, and some
young and physically talented rookie WRs: Brandon Jones,
Roydell Williams, and Courtney Roby, this is a young WR
corps, but with potential to be good. Roby and Jones were
third round picks this year and Williams was selected in the
fourth round. These three rookies have already had a lot of
experience and success with McNair as Bennett and Calico
both missed the last min-camp. Furthermore, McNair had
only good things to say about them, especially Jones. I
think Jones will emerge as the third receiver and the best
of the rookie trio. Then at tight end, McNair has Erron
Kinney and last year's top pick, Ben Troupe, on hand.
I believe Troupe will make a big impact and surprise many
this year. While McNair loses his old offensive coordinator,
he might arguably get a better and more liked one in Norm
Chow. Chow was the mastermind behind the USC Trojans
national championships. He is considered a football genius
in many circles and one of the best play callers in the
game.
With all of this said, there are still some things that
fantasy owners will worry about in regard to McNair this
year. Namely his injury history, missing a lot of the
season last year, and the loss of former number one receiver
Derrick Mason. These are legitimate worries to have, but I
expect McNair to return to form and back to arguably being a
top ten quarterback.
